The History of GMC (General Motors Company)
The General Motors Company was created more than a century ago. In 1901, Max Grabpwsly, manufactured some of the first trucks to ever hit the public market under the company name Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. General Motors was founded by William Durant in 1908. General Motors acquired Rapid Motor Company in 1909. Together, General Motors and Rapid Motor Vehicle Company became General Motors Company. It is known today as simply, GMC.
In 1912 the first mass produced truck was released. 22,000 trucks were produced that year. GM only contributed 372 units to this new American love affair with the truck. When World War II came, GMC had over 600,000 trucks produced for the United States Military.
1916 saw a GMC Truck cross the country in thirty days. It drove from Seattle, Washington to New York City, New York. In 1926, a two ton GMC truck went the opposite direction in five days and 30 minutes. It drove from New York to San Francisco, California.
In 1925 GM purchased a controlling interest in Yellow Coach, a bus manufacturer. After purchasing the remaining portion in 1943, GM renamed the division GM Truck and Coach Division. Transit bus production ended in Mary 1987.
GMC has produced Light – duty trucks, Medium – duty trucks, Heavy – duty trucks, Buses, Vans, SUV’s, Motorhomes, and Military Vehicles, Fire Trucks, Ambulances, and Transit Busses. There have been many GMC classic Light- duty trucks produced and then discontinued including Spirit, Caballero, Syclone, Sonoma, and Canyon.
