Honda announces to test its new Driving Support System on public roads
Honda announces its intentions to start its driving support system public road demonstration testing in April 2014, using the traffic signal information. The demonstration testing is said to be conducted in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture in Japan in alliance with the UTMS Society of Japan and Tochigi Prefectural Police, as part of the research and development of Universal Traffic Management System (UTMS) in which Honda has been participating. This long-term and large-scale public road testing will allow Honda confirm the overall effectiveness and functionality of the system. The system will help support a smooth driving at signalized intersections utilizing traffic signal information obtained through infrared beacons located on the side of the roads as well as velocity and location information of the vehicle itself. The system will show the recommended speed when the it senses that the vehicle can be driven through a forthcoming signalized intersection having a green traffic light.
Maintaining the recommended speed, the vehicle can then drive smoothly through the intersection. Similarly the system will inform the driver to slow down when it senses that the vehicle will need to be stopped at an intersection in case of a red traffic light. Hence the driver would be able to make an early start on deceleration. Moreover, the system will display the remaining red-light time while the driver is waiting for the traffic light to turn green. This will help prevent a delay in resuming driving. These facilities will allow the driver to reduce the amount of unnecessary acceleration/deceleration and is expected to improve practical fuel economy and prevent traffic accidents.
