Volkswagen Displays off-road-styled Beetle Dune Concept at the North American International Auto Show
Volkswagen, being a pioneer of beetle auto design, has been making advancements in this line-up of vehicles. This time the automaker has presented a new concept in the shape of Dune, at the 2014 North American International Auto Show. As narrated by Volkswagen itself, the Dune concept is production ready and will be seen shortly. The designers and engineers have made certain adjustments to the design and mechanics to transform a conventional beetle type into an off road racer. I will highlight some of its astounding features.
Powertrain:
Dune has a highly power-driven 2.0 liter engine based on Beetle R-Line technology. This four cylinder engine is capable of direct injection and produces 210 horsepower. It is supported by a six speed dual clutch automatic transmission that ensures a smooth driving experience. As expected, it has front wheel drive layout with standard electronic XDS differential.
Exterior:
The Beetle Dune concept displayed at the Detroit exhibition was coated in yellow-orange metallic. This color is termed as Arizona and will be seen at different instances within Beetle Dune. The body is much widened by increasing the front and rear tracks. To give it a definite off road look, the wheel size is increased to 19 inch that entirely covers the wheel housing, while the polished aluminum rims are inserted with black paint outlining the spokes.
The new hood with central chrome strip in the front raises the center section. However, the redesigned front apron not only highlights the sporty look, but also features large central air intake. A three dimensional logo appears center aligned on the front grill. On the both sides of this apron, are implanted the LED fog lights. The spoiler outside the trunk lid clamps skis. Another spoiler near the roof is painted in a glossy black material, just like that on the rooftop. The upper surface also surrounds a transparent tilted sunroof. Another 3D logo resides in the center of trunk lid.
Interior:
The interior of Volkswagen Beetle Dune has been given the due importance, similar to the outer appearance. The new Dune encloses a grab handle on the passenger side, covered by soft touch material with the same colors of exterior. This handle replaces the classic Beetle Bin. Apart from that, the seats are covered in soft black leather on the outer side, and sporty fabric on the inner. All the front and rear seats are prettily stitched in the Arizona color.
Multimedia:
The front fascia of the Beetle Dune mounts a 7.7 inch touchscreen LED screen with a detailed image display capacity. The screen interfaces the infotainment system with higher level of interactivity. Considering the usefulness of cooperating applications, the concept car encloses ‘Volkswagen Sideways’ app. This app effectively integrates known Points of Interest into the navigation system. A lot more can be discovered while exploring through this new software.
With these innovations into one of the most favorite designs of all times, Volkswagen has collected much admirations from the attendants of Detroit Auto Show. The manufacturer would soon come up with the final production of Volkswagen Beetle Dune.
