The Tokyo Motor Show
The Tokyo Motor Show 2013
Organizers of Tokyo Motor Show 2013 are Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. The Tokyo Motor Show is scheduled for 20 November, and is expected to present new metal and futuristic concept cars. This time the show is proposed for November 20-December 1. It takes place at the Tokyo Big Sight 3-11-1 Ariake, Koto-Ku, Tokyo every year by the end of November or in early December. Being an international auto exhibition it makes automakers of the whole world to present their new vehicles, concepts and technologies. The Tokyo Motor Show uses significantly larger space to introduce vehicles. A number of TV channels and broadcasting agencies provide full coverage of the show.
Background of the Show
The first Tokyo Motor Show held in an outdoor venue, Hibiya Park, in 1954. The show was declared a big success cumulating 547,000 visitors in ten days. 254 exhibitors displayed 267 vehicles, but the show was largely covered by commercial vehicles as there were only 17 passenger cars. Due to some construction work near Hibiya Park in 1958, the venue was replaced by Korakuen Bicycle Racing Track. The shows of 1957 and 1958 were ruined by heavy rains, hence in 1959 the event was held at the indoor Harumi Showplace venue. This venue exceeded the size of the previous venue by three times. After 1973, the show became a biennial event as the organizers didn’t host a show for the following year because of the international energy crisis. The event was then held at the Makuhari Messe in 1989 and due to huge public interests for simple vehicles and domination of concept cars, the show started to be held annually from 2001 to 2005 showing passenger cars and motorcycle and for the following year, another show for commercial vehicles. However in 2007, the event again returned to a biennial schedule combining both passenger and commercial vehicles, with the inclusion of motorcycles and auto parts.
The Tokyo Motor Show 2011 Coverage
According to Yokohama, the grand Tokyo Motor Show in 2011 attracted 174 automotive industry exhibitors and almost 840,000 visitors. This show presented VW (Cross Coupe concept and Passat Alltrack), BMW (ActiveHybrid 5) and Audi (A1 Sportback), all introducing new metal. But an offer from the domestic brands was the most important. At Tokyo 2011, the Japanese delivered two spades and two new comers stood out: a clever commuter vehicle and a rash of less expensive sports cars styled to mix purity and performance. The wide range of sports cars at the show weren’t dealing with high levels of grip and big power outputs only. At the show Honda revealed the EV-STER, a tiny electric roadster that will be produced in the upcoming two years. Suzuki, Honda, and Daihatsu all of them amused people to see tiny Renault Twizy-alike urban runabouts, while Nissan introduced its third and final Pivo concept.
