New S 500 Plug-in Hybrid Sets New Benchmark – Runs 100 kilometers for Just 3 Liters
While hybrids are all the rage this year, the new S 500 plug in hybrid completely shatters expectations. Expected to be showcased by Mercedes-Benz at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year and released next year; the car has earned the attention of masses as it offers 69 g CO2 per kilometer. In layman terms, the hybrid runs 100 kilometers on three liters of petrol, and if that’s not all, it runs as smooth as any other car!
The S 500 plug-in hybrid has a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour, and it reaches to 100 km/h in just five and a half seconds. Additionally, it has got pre-entry climate control of inside, easy charging of the high voltage traction battery, anticipatory energy management, a power output of 245 kilowatts of the combustion engine, 80 kW of the electric motor and torque of 480 Nm.
“With the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid Mercedes-Benz sets another milestone on the road to emission-free mobility on the basis of our modular hybrid matrix”, said Thomas Weber who is also the head of Mercedes Benz Cars Product Engineering.
He further mentioned, “In this way, the S-Class turns into a genuine three-liter car with generous space and superlative drive-system comfort.”
S 500 offers four hybrid operating modes that can be activated on the click of a button:
- HYBRID
- E-MODE: electric power only
- E-SAVE: fully charged battery is reserved to be able to drive on electric power alone later
- CHARGE: battery is charged while driving
You will be pleasantly shocked to find out that S 500 is actually pretty smooth for a hybrid. Yet, we aren’t really surprised considering how its predecessor, the S 400 was the first of its kind with the lithium-ion battery released in 2009.
